NewsButton ("the app") is an independent app developed by Sagar Chapagain ("we", "us"). This policy explains how the app handles your information. In short: NewsButton needs no account, what you read stays on your device, and the only thing we measure is which parts of the app get used.

Information we collect

No personal information, and no account. NewsButton needs no sign-in. We never ask for your name, your email address or your phone number, we sell nothing about you, and there is still no NewsButton server anywhere.

Two services do collect data while you use the app:

Neither of them records what you read. Which stories you open, which you save, and which sources you hide or reorder stay on your device.

What the app connects to

Headlines come from each publisher's own public RSS feed, fetched directly by your device, as are article thumbnails and most source logos, either from the publisher's servers or the content-delivery network it uses. A few logos ship inside the app and need no connection. Some listed outlets publish no feed at all, among them Nepal's share-market portals; nothing is fetched from them in the background, and tapping one opens that site in the app's built-in browser.

So whenever the app fetches a feed or an image, or you open an article or a listed site, your device connects to that site directly, and that site receives standard network data such as your IP address, under its own privacy policy. None of it reaches us: there is no NewsButton server in between. The one page of ours the app opens is this policy, reachable from More, a plain static page with no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts.

Version 1.0.1 added one more connection: the app asks Google Play whether a newer version is available, so it can offer you the update in place. That check carries no information about what you read.

The Nepali calendar

Version 2.0.0 adds a Nepali patro. The dates, festivals, lunar days and auspicious dates are bundled inside the app and need no connection. Two figures on that screen are fetched, both published by somebody else for everyone:

Each request asks only for the published rates and sends nothing about you. As with any web request those sites receive standard network data such as your IP address, under their own privacy policies. Nothing comes back to us.

The date notification and the home-screen widget

The app can show today's Nepali date in your notification shade and on your home screen. Both read the calendar already inside the app, so neither fetches nor sends anything. The notification can be switched off at any time from More, and the widget is removed the way any widget is.

On Android 13 and later the app explains what the notification shows before Android's permission dialog appears, and waits until you have finished the introduction rather than asking at launch. Declining costs you nothing else in the app, and if the permission is off, More opens the system settings page for it.

Your preferences, saved stories and notes

Everything the app keeps for you (your theme, the order of your sources and which you have hidden, stories you save, and any notes you write on the calendar) is stored only on your device. None of it is uploaded to us or to any server, and you can remove it by clearing the app's data or uninstalling the app.

Content belongs to the publishers

Headlines, summaries, images and publisher logos belong to their respective publishers, and each is credited to its source. NewsButton links to the original articles and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an official product of any news outlet.

Usage measurement

From version 2.1.0, NewsButton records anonymous usage events so we can see which parts of the app get used. This is the only thing we measure.

Recorded: which screens you open, by name; when the app is opened, backgrounded and closed; your device type, Android version and the app's own version; and a random identifier created on your device, which is not your advertising ID, belongs to no account, and is replaced when you clear the app's data. The app may also record which in-app controls you use, such as switching the home layout; where it does, the event names the control, never the story.

Never recorded: what you read. No headline, article link or publisher is attached to any event, and a source is named only when you act on the source itself, such as starring it.

Nor where you are: the app switches off the location lookup the analytics service would otherwise run on your IP address, so no country, region or city is derived from it. Session recording and screen replay are off, and nothing you type, and no name, email address, contact or file, is ever collected.

These events travel over an encrypted connection to PostHog, which stores them on servers in the United States and handles them on our behalf under its own privacy policy. We do not sell this data, and it is never shared with advertisers.

Version 2.1.0 has no switch to turn this off, and we would rather say so than imply a control that is not there.

Advertising

From version 2.0.0, NewsButton may show banner ads supplied by Google AdMob. They are banners at the bottom edge of browsing screens and nothing else: nothing in the app opens a full-screen ad, and no ad is ever placed inside a list of headlines where it could be mistaken for one.

When ads are shown, Google collects information from your device to deliver and measure them, including your advertising ID, IP address, general location derived from that address, device type and operating system, and how you interact with the ads shown. We never see this data ourselves. It goes to Google, and Google's use of it is governed by its own privacy policy and by How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

What you read is never used for advertising. The stories you open, the sources you hide or reorder, the stories you save and the notes you write stay on your device.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, NewsButton asks your consent before any ad is requested, and shows no ads until you answer. You can change or withdraw that answer at any time from the app's More screen. Wherever you are, you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device settings, under Google → Ads.

Third-party services

The app uses three, all described above: Google AdMob for advertising, Google Play for the update check, and PostHog for usage measurement. Everything else it talks to is a publisher, Nepal Rastra Bank, FENEGOSIDA, or this site.

Data retention & deletion

Your preferences, saved stories and notes live on your device; deleting the app or clearing its data removes them permanently. Notes are not backed up anywhere, which the app says on screen before you write one. Pages opened in the built-in browser may leave cookies or site data, as they would in any browser, and clearing the app's data removes those too.

The events described under Usage measurement are held by PostHog on our behalf. They are tied to no account, so there is no sign-in under which they could be looked up or handed back to you. Clearing the app's data gives your device a new random identifier. If you have a question about this data, email the address below.

Children's privacy

NewsButton is a general-audience news reader, not directed at children. We knowingly collect no personal information from anyone, including children; ads are requested with a general-audience content rating; and the usage measurement above is anonymous and never used to profile an individual reader.

Security

NewsButton has no accounts and no server of its own. Your preferences are protected by your device's own protections, feed requests travel directly between your device and the publishers, and everything sent to PostHog and Google AdMob travels over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version is posted here with a new "last updated" date, and the one it replaces is kept at Earlier versions so anyone on an older build can read the terms that applied to it.
