This is the policy for NewsButton 2.0.0. Read the current policy.

NewsButton ("the app") is an independent app developed by Sagar Chapagain ("we", "us"). This policy explains how the app handles your information. In short: NewsButton needs no account, we collect nothing ourselves, and everything you read, save or set stays on your device.

What changed in 2.0.0: the app now carries banner ads supplied by Google AdMob, and adds a Nepali calendar that fetches published exchange and bullion rates. Both are described below. Earlier versions carried neither, and their policy is kept here.

Information we collect

None, by us. NewsButton needs no account or sign-in. We do not collect, store, share, or sell any personal information, and there is no NewsButton server anywhere.

Google does collect information in order to show and measure the ads described under Advertising. That data goes to Google, not to us.

What the app connects to

Headlines come from each publisher's own public RSS feed, fetched directly by your device. Article thumbnails and most source logos are fetched the same way: from the publisher's own servers, or the content-delivery network that publisher uses. A few source logos ship inside the app itself, so showing those needs no connection at all.

Some of the outlets the app lists publish no feed at all: Nepal's share-market portals, and a number of news, business, tech and English-language sites. Nothing is fetched from any of them in the background; they are links, and tapping one opens that site in the app's built-in browser.

So whenever the app fetches a feed or an image, and whenever you open an article or one of those listed sites, your device connects to that site directly. As with any web request, that site receives standard network data such as your IP address. That traffic is governed by each site's own privacy policy, and none of it reaches us. There is no NewsButton server in between.

The one page the app opens that is ours rather than a publisher's is this policy, reachable from the app's More screen. It is a plain static page: no cookies, no analytics, no third-party scripts.

One more connection, added in version 1.0.1: the app asks Google Play whether a newer version of NewsButton is available, so it can offer you the update in place. That check goes to Play, which already delivered the app to your device, and it carries no information about what you read.

The Nepali calendar

Version 2.0.0 adds a Nepali patro. The dates, the festivals, the lunar days and the auspicious dates are bundled inside the app and need no connection at all.

Two things on that screen are fetched, both of them figures somebody else publishes for everyone:

These are the first things the app fetches that are not a publisher. Each request asks only for the published rates; it sends nothing about you, and as with any web request those sites receive standard network data such as your IP address, under their own privacy policies. Nothing comes back to us.

The date notification and the home-screen widget

The app can show today's Nepali date in your notification shade and on your home screen. Both read the calendar already inside the app, so neither fetches anything and neither sends anything anywhere. The notification can be switched off at any time from the app's More screen, and the widget is removed the way any widget is.

On Android 13 and later the app asks for notification permission at the moment it first posts that date, never at launch. Refusing it costs you nothing else in the app.

Your preferences, saved stories and notes

Everything the app keeps for you (your theme, the order of your sources and which you have hidden, stories you save to read later, and any notes you write on the calendar) is stored only on your device. They are not uploaded to us or to any server, and you can remove them at any time by clearing the app's data or uninstalling the app.

Content belongs to the publishers

Headlines, summaries, images, and publisher logos shown in the app belong to their respective publishers, and each is credited to its source. NewsButton links to the original articles and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an official product of any news outlet.

Advertising

From version 2.0.0, NewsButton may show banner ads supplied by Google AdMob. They sit at the bottom edge of the screen on browsing surfaces: the home tabs, a source's feed, a category, the recent-headlines list and your saved stories.

They are banners and nothing else. Nothing in the app opens a full-screen ad, not on opening the app, not between screens, and not when you tap a story. No ad is ever placed inside a list of headlines where it could be mistaken for one, and there are none on the article screen, in the built-in browser, or on any settings screen.

Ads do not appear immediately: a new install sees none until the app has been opened a few times.

When ads are shown, Google collects information from your device to deliver and measure them, including your advertising ID, IP address, general location derived from that address, device type and operating system, and how you interact with the ads shown.

We never see this data ourselves. It goes to Google, and Google's use of it is governed by its own privacy policy and by How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

What you read is never used for advertising. The stories you open, the sources you hide or reorder, the stories you save and the notes you write stay on your device and are never read for ads or sent anywhere.

Ads are requested with a general-audience content rating.

Your choices about ads

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, NewsButton asks your consent before any ad is requested, and shows no ads until you answer. You can change or withdraw that answer at any time from the app's More screen.

Wherever you are, you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device settings, under Google → Ads.

Third-party services

NewsButton uses Google AdMob for the advertising described above, and Google Play for the update check described above. It uses no analytics SDK of any kind: nothing measures which screens you open, which stories you read, or how long you stay. Everything else the app talks to is a publisher, Nepal Rastra Bank, FENEGOSIDA, or this site.

Data retention & deletion

Your preferences, saved stories and notes live on your device. Deleting the app, or clearing its data in your device settings, permanently removes them. Notes are not backed up anywhere, which the app says on screen before you write one. Pages you open in the app's built-in browser may leave cookies or site data on your device, exactly as they would in any browser; clearing the app's data removes those too.

Children's privacy

NewsButton is a general-audience news reader. It is not directed at children, we collect no data from anyone including children, and ads are requested with a general-audience content rating.

Security

NewsButton has no accounts and no server of its own. Your preferences are protected by your device's own protections, and feed requests travel directly between your device and the publishers.

Changes to this policy

This policy has been superseded. The current policy applies from NewsButton 2.1.0, and every published version is listed under Earlier versions.
